PRESS RELEASE 8 August 2019:
A small Strathalbyn family business renowned for its bespoke joinery has taken out every award on offer for South Australian kitchens at the national 2019 KBDi Designer Awards on August 3.
Not only did SpaceCraft Joinery win each of the three categories for its designs in the Small, Large and Kitchens Plus categories, but co-owner and designer, Nathan Wundersitz CKD Au, was also fittingly crowned Kitchen Designer of the Year for SA.
It’s a massive achievement for the highly respected Wundersitz family, although it seemed almost inevitable. Nathan has twice won Kitchen Designer of the Year for this state in 2016 and 2017, and won two out of the three categories in last year’s awards. This year’s clear dominance, however, has surprised and delighted the humble family.
Nathan says, “I get energised by a great creative brief from a client who wants to push the boundaries and is not afraid to think outside the norm. It’s their trust and inspiration that drives us; the awards are a nice reassurance that our peers in the industry also appreciate our work.”
He was quick to pay tribute to his small but highly skilled design and production team, complemented by his wife and business partner, Ellen. “It’s the quality of their work in bringing my designs to life that really makes the difference. Without craftsmanship, an idea is just purely that” he said.
The Kitchen Plus category (new this year) was given to a project the KBDi judges “loved because of its balanced combination of materials… and the exceptional use of asymmetry. The kitchen and its adjoining butler’s pantry are well laid out and functional, with both spaces as practical as they are pretty.”
Owner, Heidi of the winning ‘Kitchen Plus’ kitchen, said “This is such exciting news. The workmanship and quality of our bespoke kitchen is an absolute showpiece in our new home. How privileged are we to have worked with the incredible team at SpaceCraft Joinery. Massive congratulations.”
This same project won Nathan the SA Kitchen Designer of the Year award and reflects the growing trend for SpaceCraft to create and build all internal joinery for building projects.
The three kitchens that won.
SA Small Kitchen: a cool, ‘60s vibe with clean lines and a groovy aesthetic for Fleur & James in Blackwood.
SA Large Kitchen: a monochromatic masterpiece for entertainers, Emma & Russell, in Strathalbyn.
SA Kitchens Plus & Kitchen Designer of the Year: unifying colours and materials integrate Heidi & Nathan’s ‘forever home’ in Strathalbyn.
