The Brief

...Our job was to design a very cool, very functional and very distinctive kitchen…unlike anything they’d previously seen before...

The Jetson’s cartoon was set in 2062. Their family home, set on stilts, was full of whimsical inventions. And if their ancestors had a beach house, this one could be it.

As it happens, it belongs to our clients, who travel a lot for work. They needed a place to slow down, and Middleton was the location of choice for their new build.

Our job was to design a very cool, very functional and very distinctive kitchen to match. One unlike anything they’d previously seen before. How fun is that? Especially when also asked to tie in the design with the home’s striking exterior detailing. Thank you, angular orange struts!

Alongside the exterior accent colours, they wanted a complementary colour palette inspired by the surrounding coastal environment, including blues and greens.

Passionate about cooking, the kitchen had to be highly functional and adaptable. Passionate about sharing their cooking, they needed to have a warm and welcoming atmosphere, suitable for entertaining.

And we needed to give a subtle nod to mid-century design (which we love), with influence from Mondrian-inspired detailing.

FYI, Piet Mondrian’s style is a cornerstone of modern design. Think geometric shapes, asymmetrical balance and primary colours. His signature era is the grid-board paintings defined by thick black lines and rectangles of white, red, yellow and blue. You’ll know them when you see them.

Other considerations were ample storage and a minimalist approach to ensure key design features stand out within the space.

Designer Beth went all in.

Our Design Resolution

...This is exactly the kind of welcoming environment and kitchen social interaction our clients were seeking...

The bold orange was non-negotiable, and Beth worked it in a treat. The island is something to behold with its custom leg design that references the exterior steel feature in shape, form and colour. It may not be intentional, but they hint funkily at the legs of a seagull, which is incredibly apt given the location and a table that’ll feed hungry beachgoers.

We snuck a couple of stools into the layout, which pretty much screams “come sit and chat”, in the friendliest of ways. This is exactly the kind of welcoming environment and kitchen social interaction our clients were seeking.

Topping off the island’s distinctive personality are two features: the orange stripes across its angular underbody, and the floating element, which extends past the kicker (propped up by the feature leg and concealed internal supports). Open shelves at the other end give the clients room to display pieces that reflect their personality.

The orange pop does not stop there. Beth introduced it through the backs of the open shelving, in varying shades to create visual interest and avoid a uniform appearance. Cabinetry downlights were incorporated to highlight the colour accents.

For the broader palette, we included the kinds of greens and blues synonymous with the seaside. Deep blue tiles wrap around the wall above the benchtop and the kicker at the base of the island. Joinery fronts were finished in a green hue with blue undertones.

With blunt edges aplenty, we used timber elements to introduce warmth and soften the palette. They complement the surrounding colours and enhance the overall ambience.

The Mondrian influence made its mark via black accents on the shelving trim and benchtop. They provide contrast and prevent the benchtop from competing visually with the kitchen’s feature elements – the island, rangehood box and overhead open shelving.

Similarly, the remaining joinery was intentionally designed to be clean and minimal. This approach included flat panel fronts, reverse-bevel finger pulls instead of handles, and the absence of profiled joinery fronts.

We met the challenge of sufficient storage while accommodating a preference for open overhead shelving with careful planning. A balance of practicality and display. Like turning the wine storage into a geometric feature. Along with the flat-out funkiness of the small, angular wall shelf, it deserved to shine and shine it does.

Nod to the exterior? Nailed. Distinctive design? Well and truly mastered.
