Sometimes it’s a big event that gets you really thinking about your kitchen differently.
Your turn to host Christmas. A milestone birthday. Family coming home from interstate or overseas. A wedding celebration. A growing family. Or perhaps this is your forever home.
You know you want to stay, and you’re ready to create a kitchen that works beautifully for you now — but you’ve also started thinking about what you’ll need from it in 10, 15 or 20 years. Or, sometimes, there’s just no big occasion at all.
You’ve simply just reached the point where you’re ready to create a kitchen that works better for the way you live. Whatever prompts it, these moments have a way of making you notice your space.
Where does everyone congregate? Is there room to cook while someone else pours a drink? Where does the food go? Is there enough storage? Can people be together without being on top of each other (not literally—but you get the point)?
And beyond how it works — does it feel like you? Because your kitchen doesn’t need to look like everybody else’s.
Start with how you want to live
You don’t need to map out a floor plan or have a perfectly curated Pinterest board to start designing your kitchen. You might just have a few ideas, a specific material you just absolutely love, images you’ve saved, or things about your current kitchen that drive you absolutely bonkers. Or, you might just know you want something different.
Not different just for the sake of it, but something considered, personal, practical, and beautiful. A kitchen designed around the way you cook, gather, entertain and live. That’s all you need to get started.
Think about tomorrow, too
If you’re planning to stay in your home for years to come, it’s worth thinking about how the space will work for you down the track, too.
How might you use the kitchen in years to come? Could storage be easier to reach, would drawers work better than deep cupboards, are handles comfortable and easy to grip, and could the layout make moving around the kitchen easier?
They might all seem like small details now, but they can make a big difference down the track.
And when we understand your long-term plans from the very beginning, we can consider this as part of the design — rather than trying to adapt the kitchen after the fact. The best kitchens work for the way you live now, with room to grow and change alongside you.
What are you looking forward to?
Think about what’s coming up in the next year or two — and even further ahead.
More entertaining? Family visiting? A significant celebration? Kids getting older — or your family getting bigger? Settling into the home you hope to stay in for many years? Perhaps there’s something you’d love your home to be ready for.
A considered kitchen takes time to design, refine and create. Which means the best time to start the conversation isn’t a few months before the big occasion. It’s well before it.
And if Christmas is the thing that’s making you look around your kitchen and think we really need to do something about this?
Maybe this Christmas isn’t the deadline. Maybe you landed here for a reason. Consider this your sign from the design gods to start planning what comes next!
