There are some changes happening in our Design Team next year. Our lovely Saz (Sarah) is heading off on maternity leave in March (2027), and rather than looking for someone to fill her seat while she’s away, we’ve decided to use this opportunity to grow our team. So, we’re looking for another full-time Designer to join us at SpaceCraft.
We’ve been designing and making custom joinery in Strathalbyn for 18 years now, and over that time we’ve built a reputation for doing things that aren’t necessarily run-of-the-mill. That means we’re lucky enough to attract clients who come to us because they want something different. Sometimes they genuinely do. Sometimes they think they do, but what they’re asking for doesn’t feel particularly different to us yet. That’s when the fun starts.
We love pushing an idea further, trying a new material, finish or process, or working out how something could be made when the obvious answer is that it probably can’t. There’s plenty of throwing ideas around with the other Designers, Detailers, Cabinetmakers and Installers until we find a way to make something work.
Because when we design and manufacture under the same roof, our Designers don’t work in isolation from what happens next. You’ll get to know the manufacturing and installation side of the process intimately and work alongside the people who turn your ideas into actual joinery. They’ll probably challenge you occasionally too, and we think that makes better Designers.
You’ll work across projects for some fabulous repeat builder clients, as well as directly with homeowners undertaking renovations and new builds. Our Designers work with clients from the early stages of establishing their brief and budget, through concept development, presentation and refinement, before working with the broader team to bring those projects to life.
And when you create something particularly special, you get to put your own name on it. Our Designers are encouraged to enter their work into industry awards and, unlike some parts of the industry, we’re very happy for the person who actually designed the project to receive recognition for it. We’re proud of the awards SpaceCraft has collected over the years, but we’re equally proud when the individual Designer gets to stand alongside their work and say, “I designed that.”
Who Are We Hoping To Find?
Ideally, you’ll have at least two years’ experience designing joinery or cabinetry. That’s important to us because we’re looking for someone who understands more than what looks good. You need a solid appreciation for how cabinetry is constructed, manufactured and installed, and how the decisions made at design stage affect everyone who touches the project afterwards.
You don’t need to know everything. You’ll have Detailers, cabinetmakers, installers and other Designers around you, and there’s plenty you’ll learn from working closely with them. But we’d love you to arrive with a good technical foundation, along with a strong eye for colour, materiality, proportion and detail.
You’ll also need to enjoy working with people. Our Designers spend plenty of time with clients, understanding what they’re trying to achieve, working within real-world budgets, presenting ideas and helping them make decisions. So we’re looking for someone who is creative and curious, but also practical, organised, commercially aware and a good communicator.
What Are We Like?
We’ve built a fabulous team here, and we’re pretty careful about who we add to it. We work hard and expect a lot of each other, but we also genuinely enjoy coming to work. There are monthly toolbox talk lunches, birthday cakes, social functions and plenty of laughs in between.
There’s quite a bit happening at SpaceCraft at the moment too. We’ve recently expanded our workshop, we have new operational leadership joining the business, and we’re continuing to invest in our people, systems and the way we work. It feels like a pretty exciting time to join us.
And perhaps you’re already living somewhere around Strathalbyn, Mount Barker, Murray Bridge, the Adelaide Hills or Fleurieu and currently travelling the other way for work. If so, working closer to home might be another pretty good reason to have a conversation.
This is a full-time, on-site role based in Strathalbyn. Being here matters because so much of the learning, collaboration and problem-solving happens between our Design Studio, technical team and workshop.
Sound Like You?
Maybe you’ve been designing joinery for a couple of years and you’re ready for a new challenge. Perhaps you’ve become very good at designing what your current employer sells, but you’d like the opportunity to stretch yourself creatively. Or maybe you’d simply love to work somewhere you can walk into the workshop and talk to the person actually building your project.
If you’ve got 2+ years of joinery/cabinetry design experience, love good design, understand how things are made and think you’d fit into our team, we’d really like to hear from you.
Send us a short introductory cover email or letter telling us a little about yourself and why this role caught your attention, along with your CV and design folio, addressed to Ellen. Apply via e-mail here.
We’d love to see what you’ve been creating.
