Integrated fridges are a fantastic way to achieve a seamless, minimalist look in your kitchen. But before you commit, there are a few important things to consider to make sure it’s the right choice for your space and lifestyle.
1. Height and Accessibility
Some integrated fridges are really tall, with higher shelves that can be a pain to reach—especially when you’re just trying to grab a quick snack (or you are vertically challenged, like me :-). I always recommend seeing the fridge in person to get a sense of how practical it will be for you and your family.
2. Internal Space vs. External Size
Integrated fridges can sometimes look big on the outside but feel small inside. The bulky casing and mechanisms can eat into storage space, so check the actual usable capacity to make sure it works for your needs.
3. Budget vs. Aesthetic
Let’s be honest: integrated fridges can be pricey. They’re worth it if aesthetics are a top priority, but if the budget is tight, it might be better to focus elsewhere. For some, it’s a luxury worth splurging on; for others, it’s not a dealbreaker.
4. Door Swing and Placement
Where you place your fridge in the kitchen matters.
- If it’s near a wall, the door might not open fully, making it hard to access shelves.
- Flush-mount designs can also restrict door movement unless the fridge is fully integrated.
Think about how you’ll move around the space when the fridge is open—it’s a detail that’s easy to overlook.
5. Ventilation
This one’s a bit technical, but super important. Integrated fridges often need specific ventilation clearances, and these can range from just a couple of millimetres to up to 200mm per side! Double-check these specs before finalising your fridge purchase in conjunction with your cabinet maker or designer!!
6. Cabinetry and Kicker Details
Some integrated fridges need to be surrounded by a carcase (cabinet) to support the doors, while others don’t. Pay attention to how they sit on the kicker, too—some use their own built-in kicker, which can affect the overall height and design of your cabinetry.
7. Energy Efficiency
Integrated models aren’t always as energy-efficient as freestanding fridges because of the ventilation needs. Be sure to check the energy rating to avoid any surprises when your electricity bill arrives.
8. If Not Integrated…
For those skipping integration, keep in mind that freestanding fridges often stick out past your cabinetry, which can intrude into walkways. It’s not a dealbreaker, but something to be aware of.
My Final Tip: Go See It!
If you’re seriously considering an integrated fridge, don’t just rely on photos or measurements. Visit a showroom and see it in person. It’s the best way to really understand how it looks, feels, and functions.
Choosing an integrated fridge is a bit of an investment, but when done right, it’s a feature you’ll enjoy every day. If you’ve got questions or need help, we’re always available to chat about your options!
