Microwaves Unboxed

by Ellen Wundersitz, June 2024

Microwaves often get overlooked in kitchen design despite their specific requirements, such as clearances, height, and proximity to combustible surfaces. However, with careful planning, designers can transform this challenge into an opportunity to enhance both safety and functionality.

First and foremost, ensuring adequate ventilation around the microwave is crucial to prevent overheating. Proper clearances, as specified by the manufacturer, must be maintained to avoid fire hazards and ensure optimal performance. Positioning the microwave at a convenient height for all users is also essential. Typically, placing it between 350mm and 1200mm from the floor works best, allowing easy access for everyone, including children and those with mobility issues.

Another critical factor is the microwave’s proximity to combustible surfaces. It is important to keep the microwave away from easily combustible materials such as wooden cabinets or curtains, following the manufacturer’s guidelines for safe distances.

To seamlessly integrate microwaves into kitchen designs, designers can consider innovative solutions. Trim kits, for example, as per the Miele appliance tower and trim kit shown below in Deb & Barty’s kitchen image below, allows for the integration of microwaves into cabinetry, creating a sleek, built-in look that saves counter space and aligns the microwave with the kitchen’s aesthetic. Additionally, combination ovens, which include microwave functionality, offer a clutter-free solution by eliminating the need for a standalone microwave and freeing up valuable space.

Additionally, it is helpful to have sufficient landing space nearby to place hot dishes when removing them from the microwave. This consideration enhances both safety and convenience, preventing accidents and making the kitchen workflow more efficient. The well-designed kitchens of Gerry & Terry and Gina & Fotios are excellent examples, featuring ample counter space adjacent to the microwave for easy handling of hot items.

By understanding and addressing the technical requirements of microwaves, designers can transform these appliances from overlooked elements into harmonious additions to well-designed spaces. Guiding clients to suitable models and thoughtfully integrating microwaves can enhance both the functionality and aesthetics of the kitchen. What was once a design challenge can become a key feature of a modern, well-planned kitchen.
