The Olympics might be over, but Spacecraft Joinery’s Design Director Nathan Wundersitz has just proven that a perfect 10 for execution isn’t just reserved for gymnasts.
At this year’s KBDi Design Awards*, held last Saturday in Melbourne, one of his kitchen projects was deemed ‘the perfect example of KBDi accredited qualities’ earning a perfect score of 10 and Nathan the highly coveted Australian Certified Kitchen Designer award.
It was a tense night of award announcements and showdown score checking via Managing Director Ellen’s phone. As a team, Spacecraft had submitted seven kitchens, with each member of the design team having at least one project in the running.
While disappointed that Sarah, Jessie and Bre weren’t winners on the night, we remain incredibly proud of their creative work. Getting to this stage is testament to its quality.
No stranger to KBDi awards, Nathan got lucky again. He won the South Australian Large Kitchen Design category with Maggie and Theo’s modern minimalist style kitchen. Plus, the major category Commercial Spaces with our very own Mad Men MCM (Mid Century Modern) showroom display kitchen.
Given Sophie Katina CKD Au had won both kitchen design categories for SA and taken out the South Australian Kitchen Designer of the Year, Nathan assumed this put him out of the running for the night’s pinnacle award. He was wrong!
We’d submitted Maggie and Theo’s kitchen in the Certified Designer category too and (as Nathan would later discover) the level of process and judges assigned differed from others.
MC James Treble announced him as this year’s winner, stating that the judges acknowledged he’d overcome ‘a number of challenges in the existing space, successfully creating a design that met the clients brief for a clutter free, functional, open plan space. Much like the kitchen itself, the designer’s documentation was clean, clear and precise, earning a perfect score in the technical criteria.’
In fact, they deemed his entry an absolute hands down winner.
Shocked, surprised and thrilled, Nathan took to the stage to celebrate an award that has long been a goal. During his impromptu speech, he congratulated the other Certified Designers on their exceptionally high calibre of entered work. He credited the important contribution our entire Spacecraft team makes to the success of each and every project – without them, none would come to fruition. Ellen was thanked for her essential role as the ‘behind-the-scenes and ofttimes front-person too’. He also thanked the judges, the KBDi team for putting on a fabulous conference and event, and the clients that trust us to deliver their dream spaces.
Checking the showdown score was the final moment of perfection—a gutsy win by Port Adelaide. The team celebrated into the night with spicy margaritas, whisky sours and mojitos.
