The Brief

...When Brad, Tara and their two children set out to renovate their 1920s Kingswood home it was all about retaining past charm while introducing present day functionality and flair...

Brad and Tara’s kitchen renovation gives off serious James Bond vibes.

You see, for more than 50 years, Bond has exuded timeless style in his classic attire. He’s remained sleek and sophisticated but also evolved on-screen to suit a modern audience.

When Brad, Tara and their two children set out to renovate the back of their 1920s Kingswood home it was all about retaining past charm while introducing present day functionality and flair.

The goal: a timeless and elegant open plan kitchen with a living and dining space ripe for regular entertainment. And it all started with a monochrome colour palette for the kitchen that would never go out of style – much like Bond’s tux. Designer Jessie got straight to work scripting their vision.

Cosentino Super White marble for the benchtops and splash back. Blackwood grain as the joinery front, to add a touch of sophistication and warmth. Lip pull handles for lower joinery, feature handles on tall.

Curves were desired and turned out to be a kitchen must – softening the look and adding a touch of modern elegance.

Next was all the functionality to consider – drawers, integrated fridge and freezer, integrated dishwasher, undermount double bowl sink, seating on the island, a built-in bin system, oven tower, appliance nook, feature wine area with glass doors, and no overhead storage.

Brad and Tara were keen on a 900mm wide gas top with a built-in range hood that would serve as a feature. And LED task lighting to illuminate specific spaces.

The plan was to seamlessly connect the kitchen design to the living room via materials and curves. Considerations included an entertainment unit, mounting the TV to wall, and wall hung open shelving either side of a fireplace for display and storage.

Channelling some Bond herself, Jessie rose calmly to the challenge.

Our Design Resolution

...From the living space to the kitchen, Jessie has prioritised function yet created a sophisticated and timeless look that embodies monochrome elegance with bold flair and a hint of modern artistry...

Jessie paired Consentino Super White stone on the bench tops, splash back, and island with Polytec Black Woodmatt melamine on all joinery fronts, creating a striking monochrome feel with rich texture.

The internal side of the island is Polytec Classic White Matt melamine for contrast while the handles on the tall joinery are made from Kethy Nyborg Black stained timber.

The stone is used on the cooktop run in 20mm edge detail and ensures the island stands out due to a bold waterfall end and 50mm edge detail. As requested, there’s room for seating. Gold-brushed lighting hovers above the dining table nearby. The entire combination oozes class.

Jessie integrated curves into the island benchtop joinery as well as the benchtop itself, continuing the flow by creating curves on the splash back, glass doors in the bar area, and on the rangehood block. Crafted from Polytec Blackwood matt, and designed with a captivating, curved shape, the rangehood is a sophisticated feature with a function.

Knowing how much Brad and Tara love to entertain, Jessie ensured the wine and bar area was a dedicated space. The curved feature glass doors front stylish angular shelving for wine and a pouring area boasting its own Consentino Super White stone bench top and splash back. Storage for glasses sits in closed shelving below.

Jessie decided that functionality took precedence in maximising the potential of Brad and Tara’s meticulously crafted extension. This would allow for ample storage and efficiency.

With plenty of drawers and some cleverly placed shelving, she avoided the need for overhead cabinets while ensuring there’s easy access to everything in a clutter-free environment.

A generous two-door pantry has inner drawers with shelving above. The appliance nook is replete with inner drawers and shelving, and it’s concealed to maintain the kitchen’s sleek appearance. With its own benchtop in Consentino Super White stone, even the nook has a touch of elegance.

Due to a substantial skylight and large glass doors, there’s a significant amount of natural light in the kitchen. Focussed LED strip lighting on the bar and appliance nook is discreet and stylish.

The double bowl sink is situated on the island, which also has the integrated dishwasher and bin-system built in. The oven tower is built into the back wall bench area while the fridge, freezer and appliance nook are all concealed alongside the pantry, behind matching doors.

The living room design follows the same material palette as the kitchen, ensuring a seamless transition between the spaces. Jessie included wall-hung storage for the TV console and added open shelving to the left of the fireplace, creating a cohesive and stylish look.

From the living space to the kitchen, Jessie has prioritised function yet created a sophisticated and timeless look that embodies monochrome elegance with bold flair and a hint of modern artistry.

Done. Job Done.
